Artwork Spotlight: Cocktail of Lights
Artwork Spotlight: Cocktail of Lights
Creator's Note—Hayley Dunne: In my mission to DIY some festive wall art for the holiday season, I was scrolling for inspiration and reference photos when I came across this beautiful editorial shot by Shamblen Studios via Unsplash. The shadows in this image caught my eye, and I loved the concept of the lights pouring into the martini glass (a true cup of cheer if you will). I uploaded the photo to the app and traced it, simplifying some complicated details - like tangled lights and shadows through the clear glass - to create a cleaner outline and, thus, a stress-free coloring process. Speaking of coloring, I used alcohol-based markers first, then went on top with colored pencils (my favorite combination of tools) to create those seamless blends; and speaking of blending, I made sure to go in with a colorless alcohol-based marker on the edges of those grey shadows to soften them up. Finally, I grabbed my tried-and-true white gel pen to add some highlights to the ornaments and string light bulbs and finished by outlining everything with a size 005 black pen.
The original photo and the simplified outline I created are in the gallery, ready for you to trace and create your version of this fun and festive artwork. Cheers!
