I want to paint my dog's photo on canvas, but I'm terrible at drawing. Can an app help?
You do not have to solve every drawing problem before you are allowed to paint.
For a first portrait or pet painting, the blank-canvas problem is often proportion: where the eyes belong, how large the head should be, whether the ears line up, and how the whole subject fits the canvas.
Cupixel lets you start from an outline based on the photograph. That does not paint the picture for you. It gives you a reliable structure so you can spend your time learning color, value, texture, brushwork and detail.
What Cupixel helps with
- Getting the subject onto the canvas at the right size
- Establishing basic proportion and placement
- Tracing the important contours by hand
- Following a real project instead of practicing abstract exercises first
- Continuing into artist-led painting instruction
From your dog's photo to a real canvas.
Choose a clear photo
Pick a photo where the face and main features are easy to see. A simple background can make the starting image easier to work with, but the most important thing is choosing a photo you actually care about turning into art.
Turn the photo into a tracing guide
With a Cupixel membership, select your own image and let Cupixel convert it into an outline you can use for tracing. This gives you the major shapes and contours without asking you to reproduce them freehand.
Position the outline over the canvas
Place your phone securely above the canvas. Through the camera view, scale and position the reference until the subject sits where you want it in the composition.
Trace the important lines by hand
While looking at the canvas and reference together on the phone screen, transfer the visible contours to the physical canvas with the drawing tool appropriate for your project.
Paint from the traced foundation
Now the subject is placed. You can begin adding color, value, fur, shadows, highlights and detail rather than starting by guessing the proportions.
Learn while you work
Use one of Cupixel's artist-led classes to learn techniques for drawing, acrylics, watercolor and other media, or create independently if you already know how you want to finish the piece.
Start with the structure, then learn the art.
Tracing does not finish the painting for you. It gives you a proportionally useful starting point so you can concentrate on the skills that make the finished piece yours.
The app helps with the starting structure. The creative work remains yours.
Cupixel does not remove the act of making art. You still choose the photograph, decide how it should fit the canvas, transfer the lines, choose materials, mix and apply color, make corrections, add detail and decide when the work is finished.
The value for a beginner is that you can begin practicing those skills without first having to master freehand proportion well enough to recreate the reference from an empty canvas.
It doesn't have to be a dog.
The same workflow can start from portraits, selfies, family photos and other images that can be converted into a useful outline. Cupixel can also work from its own designs and class projects when you do not want to upload a personal photo.
